Progressive Narration of Spatial Creativity through Experience in Architectural Design Education

Abstract

It is expected that any spatial production is typically realized through conceptualization of visible and invisible qualities of place that space is in. In this sense, this study is an experiment transforming another sort of effort into spatial narrations in an architectural design studio and proceeds in the following way: In the studio process, four students selected among fifteen students produce their own spatial narrations regarding how they positioned in place is the experiment itself in this study. This first year studio process enables students to gain experience on producing spatial solutions arising from relationships between space, context, content and concept. The students experience this process in four stages; (1) user profile reading, (2) context reading, (3) content reading and (4) concept writing. In the spring semester of the academic year 2017-2018, this architectural design studio, which was conducted by the authors of this text at Yıldız Technical University, Department of Architecture, has designated Heybeli Island of Prince Islands in Istanbul as a place. In the conclusion of the study, creative perspectives created through separate four experiences in spatial design process and how these perspectives differ from the state of creativity of typical design practices are come up for discussion. In addition, it is argued that the information which is revealed through experience is not in a position that completely denies visible and invisible qualities of place, on the contrary, these qualities are the constituents that continually produce the experience itself in the process of structuralization of space.
