Post-nuclear Space: Photography on Nuclear Threats

Abstract

The theme of a nuclear threat remains relevant, particularly in the current context of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, which has entangled the world and is often referred to as the second Cold War. This conflict has brought forth a resurgence of nuclear discourse and revived radiophobia, as increasingly depicted in the media. The public debate has unveiled a forgotten and invisible issue of radiation threat, a subject artists have been addressing since the end of World War II, and later, following the incidents in various nuclear power plants and nuclear tests. Artists’ voices strive to break through, aiming to visualize the imperceptible yet discursively acknowledged threat. This paper sheds light on the works of artists attempting to portray what cannot be seen with the naked eye, thereby sustaining awareness of nuclear threats and the consequences of radiation.
