Future of Work and Diversity: Policy Initiatives and Management Endeavors of Private Sector Corporations in India

Abstract

The world of work is changing in contemporary times. Such changes are witnessed at all levels including technological, structural, as well as in the people management. The future of work envisages to deconstruct the classic image of an employee being prominently male, full-time, and falling under prerequisites such as similar age groups, educational and socio-economic backgrounds, etc. Organizations understand the inevitable need of perspectives and approaches to work which is brought together by the members of different identity groups ensuring diverse ecosystem. Globally, still there are multiple instances of the negative business impacts on organizations as well as bad reputation as diversity vision is not provided its full potential due. In the Indian case, organizations face similar challenges in terms of maintaining an integrated workplace culture upholding diversity aspects. In order to address this requirement in the present times, companies need to respond to the increasing socio-legal and management debates around the subject of diversity through constructive and positive practicing realities. In the backdrop of this discussion this paper analyzes the present state of diversity in organizations belonging to the private sector in India. The methodology of this paper is driven by empiricism, thematic, and hermeneutic research. The framework aims at qualitative, quantitative, narrative, and perceptional analyses. The aim is to map diversity in the organizations through assessing the aspects of demographic balance, participation, transparency, and acceptance. The study incorporated in this paper sets out a demographic trend observed in the organizations covered, a review of new legislations and public policies in India, along with the endeavors of the firms if any, to promote quality, respect, and trust across multiple teams and geographies composed of heterogeneous people in terms of age, gender, sexual preferences, physical abilities, and cultures.
