Opportunities and Challenges of e-Book Readers and Mobile Devices: Experiences from Nigeria

Abstract

There is a common saying that “books are the windows to the world.” Despite the fact that in this digital age the leading role is taken by the Internet, books still play their part as openings to vast knowledge. It is no longer news that changes have been brought to the book world due to developments in modern technology. As we have printed content, so there are also digital version of books or e-books which can be read on any digital devices with e-book reader applications installed. This development has enable people to bring a library into their pockets. It has also resulted in a number of opportunities and associated challenges, although these vary from developed and developing environment experiences. In this light, this paper examines, based on experience from Nigeria, the use of e-book readers and mobile devices for reading, the opportunities and challenges associated with e-book readers and mobile devices use to promote reading, the various initiatives put up by education institutions in using the devices to promote reading, the attitudinal change of the readers due to the use of these devices, and the way forward towards promoting the use of e-book readers and mobile devices for reading in the Nigeria education institutions.
