Four Phases Practice: Layered within Each Phase Is the Whole

Abstract

Inspired by the 2018 special focus, “How Art Makes Things Happen—Situating Social Practice in Research, Practice, and Action,” I am grateful for this opportunity to share a social movement and documentation practice I have been experimenting with since 2010. The 4 Phases Practice is an all abilities, transdisciplinary movement and documentation practice for artists and scholars of all ages. Patterned after the infinity concept, layered within each phase is the whole, this practice can be done anywhere and for any amount of time. This practice is adaptable for a solo, duet, or group and can happen in your studio or in your kitchen, in one-minute increments, fifty minute increments, or in an unfolding continuum throughout your day. Questions within the practice are designed to support focused, layered discovery and research. The 4 Phases practice supports inclusivity and the development of selfhood through a safe and supportive experimental learning arena. Participants reflect and report their discoveries and further questions at the conclusion of the practice. Only a writing utensil, comfortable clothes to move in, and an open and honest spirit are necessary to engage in this guided movement and documentation practice.
