Jane Hawley, received her training from Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre in New York and the University of Illinois, earning the master of fine arts degree in performance and choreography. Performance opportunities have taken her to Eastern Europe and the ACDFA National Festival at the Kennedy Center, where she received Dance Magazine’s award for outstanding performer. As a movement artist Hawley has received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, Arts Midwest, Michigan Arts and Cultural Affairs, and Iowa Arts Council. As a movement artist, teacher, and scholar, Jane is deeply curious in renovating dance training by exploring the relationship of self to body. Her research emphasizes understanding how the body is the realization of self through the continuous experimentation, practice, and development of Movement Fundamentals. Challenges within this research lie in negotiating the boundaries and interplay between movement | dance and art | life. Hawley designed Movement Fundamentals and implemented the curriculum into the Luther College Theatre/Dance department in the spring of 2001. In the fall of 2013, the department combined with the Art program and became the Visual & Performing Arts Department. Professor Hawley has presented, Movement Fundamentals at the National Dance Education Organization Conference; Motus Humans: Laban Institute of Movement Analysis Conference; The International Association for Dance, Medicine and Science Conference, and the American College Dance Association. Hawley conducted residencies and presentations at K3-Zentrum Fur Choreographie Tanzplan, Hamburg, Germany; Legitimate Bodies Dance Company of Birr Theatre & Arts Centre, Offaly County, Ireland; Big RIg Dance Collective, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas; Arizona State University; Kansas State University; University of Colorado-Boulder; and New York University. The Movement Fundamentals curriculum was highlighted as one of twelve dance curricula in the nation currently in practice for the year 2050 at the "Fostering the Future: Higher Education Dance Curriculum Development Sessions" hosted by Movement Research and Tisch School of the Arts. Professor Hawley and the dance program of Luther College was featured in "Radically Somatic" written by Nancy Wozny for the Lifetime Learners, a supplement to Dance Magazine and Dance Teacher. Hawley's 2010 sabbatical project was a one-on-one research performance intensive with renowned dance artist, Douglas Dunn of New York. Currently, Hawley's 2017-18 sabbatical project involves launching the Movement Fundamentals Institute through the 501(c)3 organization, Black Earth Collaboative Arts, a non-profit she founded in 1996. The Movement Fundamentals Institute fosters research and development praxis highlighting Thinking through the Body: Perspectives for Interdisciplinary Endeavors and Practicing Embodiment.
