Olive Branch Petition

The author of the Olive Branch Petition uses rhetoric to enhance his argument by trying to persuade the King of Great Britain with complementory language that makes the King, his descendants and his parliament seem as though they are almighty. By complementing them, the colonists are trying to get on the King's good side so they he may do what they want him to do. The quote, "The union between our Mother Country and these colonies...produced benefits so remarkably important ... that the wonder and envy of other Nations were excited, while they beheld Great Britain riseing to a power the most extraordinary the world had ever known" indicates that the other countries are amazed by Britain and that Great Britain is the best. By illustrating Great Britain as the best and most powerful country, the colonists hoped that their kind words would get Great Britan to readjust their unfair system towards the Colonists. The quote, "...we not only most ardently desire the former harmony between her and these colonies may be restored but that a concord may be established between them upon so firm a basis, as to perputuate its blessings uninterrupted by any future dissentions to succeeding generations in both countries, and to transmit your Majestys name to posterity adorned with that signal and lasting glory that has attended the memory of those illustrious personages..." portrays how the colonists didn't want to seperate from Great Britain, but that they wanted the harmony that they had once lost to be restored. In order for such wishes to be granted, the colonists believed that they needed to glorify the King and idolize him in order for him to like them. The colonists tried to persuade the King to enhance their chances of reaching their goals.
