Theirs is: referent ⬄ thought or reference ⬄ symbol. Referent: Napoleon, the person. Reference, a long chain of sign-situations: the word – historian – contemporary record – eyewitness – referent. Symbol: the word “Napoleon.”²⁹ Each of these triads is an attempt to situate moments and artifacts of meaning in their contexts, such that the context is an integral part of the meaning.
