In contrast, knowledge tests measure what you have learned, memorized, or mastered, including facts, skills, and specific information gained through education or experience. These tests depend entirely on what you have studied or been taught, and they change as you gain more knowledge. Intelligence testing is appropriate when assessing potential, cognitive development, reasoning, or ability to adapt to new situations, but it should not be used to measure school achievement, specific skills, or effort. Knowledge testing is best for checking subject mastery, grades, qualifications, or learning progress, but it is unfair to use it to measure natural ability or compare people who had different learning opportunities.

A clear example of an intelligence test is the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS-IV), the most widely used test for adults aged 16 to 90. It measures general cognitive ability across four main areas: Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed, with an average score set at 100. Its main strengths are that it is comprehensive, well-standardized, reliable, and helps identify personal strengths and weaknesses. However, it has weaknesses too: it may have cultural bias, partly relies on learned language skills, takes time and money to administer, does not measure creativity or emotional intelligence, and results are sometimes misused to label people permanently.
