And in education and psychology a big difference is that gap between testing for intelligence and testing for knowledge. If you test intelligence, you’re mostly looking at someone’s natural potential, not really what they were taught. It tends to focus on “fluid intelligence”, the basic capacity to reason, to think in an abstract manner, and to tackle new problems without needing a bunch of previous training (Cattell, 1963). Meanwhile, testing for knowledge is more like checking what a person has actually accumulated over time. This is often called “crystallized intelligence,” meaning the specific facts, concepts, and practical skills they’ve picked up from school, plus from everyday life. So, knowledge tests kind of ask “what do you know?” while intelligence tests try to figure out “how quickly can your brain learn?” Once we see the difference, it becomes easier to set up testing environments that feel fairer for more people. Still, each test only works well if we use it for the right purpose, not just because it seems convenient. Intelligence tests can be useful in clinical spaces, for example to identify learning difficulties or gifted patterns so students can receive the right kind of support (Sattler, 2018). But it’s not ok to take an intelligence test and then use it to grade a worksheet or decide whether someone should be hired. A high intelligence score does not automatically mean someone knows how to build a house, or run a classroom smoothly, because that’s knowledge and training too, not just raw potential. At the same time, knowledge tests are great for checking whether a student actually understood a lesson from school. However, they should never be treated like a measure of someone’s baseline brain power. A low score on a history quiz could simply reflect little study time, or access to better resources like good books, not a permanent inability to learn. In our class discussion Maria made a great point that knowledge tests can quickly become straightforward memory checks, especially if teachers only ask students to repeat facts verbatim. This also lines up with what Andrew said, about intelligence tests sometimes being unfair to people from different cultures. Because questions are often written from a specific context, it can confuse students who think perfectly fine, but they just haven’t been exposed to the same cultural references or testing style. Cognitive tasks get looked at differently depending on where you come from. What seems logical in one place might not line up in another. That kind of difference shows up pretty clearly when you look at how something like the WAIS actually works in practice. It is one of those tests that gets used a lot for adults. Instead of one overall score it splits things into separate parts. There is the verbal side that checks how well someone holds onto words and meanings. Then there is the part with blocks and patterns where you have to match shapes under pressure. Memory comes into it too when you repeat numbers in reverse order. Speed shows up in scanning tasks that mix quick thinking with movement. I think the whole setup tries to cover more than just a single number.

The useful part is how it can point out uneven strengths. Someone might do fine with words but struggle when it comes to arranging blocks fast. That kind of detail helps avoid lumping everything together. Reliability is high because so many people have taken it already. Still the test leans toward certain backgrounds when it comes to vocabulary and it can feel like it measures stress handling more than calm problem solving. Creativity and real-world sense do not really factor in at all. This part about time pressure stands out because it changes what gets measured. Knowledge tests show what someone has picked up in their setting while the other kind tries to look at basic thinking skills underneath. Both can be helpful but only in the right situation.
