Pedagogical Strengths

Even though it is an old-school method, local research shows it has real benefits for teaching English:

Better Exam Scores on Grammar: Gomez (2013) found that students taught through traditional direct lectures actually got higher test scores than students left to figure things out on their own. It gives students a clear, step-by-step guide on how the English language is structured.
Good for Large Classes: Philippine classrooms often have 40 to 50+ students with very few textbooks. A grammar lecture allows one teacher to deliver standard English rules to a massive group of students at the exact same time.
Prevents Confusion with Complex Rules: When learning tricky English concepts (like passive voice or idioms), having an expert explain the rule directly stops students from getting confused or developing bad grammar habits (Stiernborg et al., 1996).

Pedagogical Limitations

While it is great for passing written tests, local scholars point out some major drawbacks for language learning:

Encourages Memorization, Not Real Communication: Historically, Philippine schools have trained students to just memorize and repeat English definitions rather than use the language naturally (Martin, n.d.). Students might pass a grammar test perfectly, but struggle to speak fluidly during a real-world job interview or conversation.
Students Become Passive Listeners: Because the teacher does all the talking, students do not get enough time to practice speaking or writing creatively. They miss out on practicing 21st-century skills like spontaneous public speaking or collaborative debate (Abbad Alessa, 2023).
Does Not Build Confidence: A study on communication and behavior by Stiernborg et al. (1996) implies that while lectures are good for teaching raw facts, they are not effective at changing a student’s actual confidence levels, comfort with a language, or social communication skills.
