MOOC Community Update: Introducing "Spatial-Textual Synesthesia"

While exploring the Discursive Dimensions of Learning (Multimodal Meaning) this week, many of us have discussed how videos or games combine text and sound. However, I want to introduce a critical multimodal concept that is often overlooked but heavily utilized in digital spaces: Spatial-Textual Synesthesia.

Defining the Concept

Coined within the broader framework of Bill Cope and Mary Kalantzis’s Grammar of Multimodal Meaning, Spatial-Textual Synesthesia is the process where the physical layout, architecture, and geographic positioning of text and digital assets alter or create the meaning of the information itself. In traditional print, text is linear (left to right, top to bottom). In digital ecologies, text becomes a spatial object. The meaning is derived not just from what the words say, but where they sit in 3D or 2D digital space, how they scale, and how the learner navigates through them geographically.

The Concept in Practice

A prime example of this concept is the use of Infinite Canvas Tools (like Miro, FigJam, or Obsidian Canvas) and Virtual Reality (VR) Data Landscapes.

Instead of reading a linear PDF report, students explore a massive, non-linear digital map where a core historical event sits in the center. Branching out spatially to the left are structural causes (colored in blue boxes); branching up are immediate timelines; and tucked into deep, zoomable pockets are primary text sources. The student uses kinetic navigation (zooming in and out, panning across distances) to synthesize information. The distance between two text boxes spatially represents the conceptual relationship or time gap between two historical ideas.
