What Educational Data Mining CAN Tell Us

The study highlights several powerful insights that data mining reveals about the learning process:

Micro-Behaviors in Real-Time: Unlike a post-test or a survey, EDM reveals the exact moment a student disengages. The researchers tracked actions down to the millisecond, noticing that students who "gamed" the system would click through 5 levels of hints within 2 seconds just to reveal the final answer.
The Intent vs. Action Gap: It isolates exactly how a student is cheating the learning mechanic. The data clustered distinct behavioral profiles: some students were rapid guessers (inputting consecutive numbers in seconds), while others were hint-abusers.
The Precise Impact on Learning Outcomes: By pairing the behavioral log data with pre- and post-test scores, the data proved that "gaming the system" had a strong, negative correlation with learning retention, whereas making honest, slow errors did not penalize student growth.

What Educational Data Mining CANNOT Tell Us

Despite these deep insights, EDM hit concrete walls when trying to decipher the deeper human elements behind the numbers:

The "Why" Behind the Behavior (Root Causality): While the model could confidently flag that a student was gaming the system, it could not determine why. Is the student gaming because they are deeply anxious about math? Are they simply bored because the work is too easy? Or are they frustrated by a poorly designed interface?
Emotional Nuance Without Multimodal Sensors: A pure log file cannot differentiate between a student who is staring at the screen for 60 seconds because they are thinking deeply (productive struggle) versus one who has completely zoned out or left their desk. To solve this, modern research must add external biometric data like eye-tracking or posture sensors.

Universal Generalizability: As discussed in the ethics and equity section, a model optimized for middle schoolers using geometry software in a well-funded suburban school frequently fails when applied to high schoolers learning biology in an under-resourced urban environment. The algorithmic definition of "normal pacing" or "engagement" changes based on the context.

Educational data mining acts like a high-powered microscope for actions—it tells us exactly what students are doing and when they are doing it. However, it remains blind to intent—it cannot definitively tell us why they are doing it without human teachers or qualitative context to fill in the gaps.
