Intelligence tests are appropriate when trying to find out if a student needs extra help in school due to a learning disability, or when identifying gifted children who need more advanced work. However, they are inappropriate when used as the only way to hire someone for a job or accept them into a university, because these tests can unfairly disadvantage people from different cultural backgrounds. Knowledge tests are appropriate when a teacher needs to see if students understood a specific math lesson, or when certifying that someone is safe to practice medicine. They are inappropriate when trying to judge a person's raw brightness if that person never had the chance to go to a good school, as a low score would only prove they lacked the opportunity to learn, not that they lack natural ability.

A great example of an intelligence test is Raven’s Progressive Matrices. This test uses visual puzzles made of geometric shapes and patterns. In each puzzle, there is a large pattern with one piece missing, and the person taking the test must look at the rows and columns to figure out the rules of the pattern and choose the correct missing piece from a few options. The puzzles start out easy but get much harder as the test goes on.

This test has major strengths but also some weaknesses. Its biggest strength is that it does not use any words, reading, or writing, making it very fair for people who speak different languages or come from different cultures. It does a great job of measuring pure, raw reasoning without giving an advantage to people who went to expensive schools. However, its main weakness is that it only measures one narrow type of thinking, which is visual and spatial logic. It completely ignores other important parts of human intelligence, like creativity, speaking skills, or emotional awareness. Also, people can get better at the test just by practicing similar puzzles, which means a high score might sometimes just come from practice rather than natural talent.
