In this module, we will explore how people communicate using not only written words, but also images, videos, sounds, gestures, design, and digital media. Today, communication happens everywhere—through social media, educational videos, online discussions, infographics, podcasts, and digital storytelling. Because of this, literacy is no longer limited to reading books and writing essays. Learners today must also know how to interpret and create meaning using multiple modes of communication.

This module is based on the principles of:

Multiliteracies pedagogy
Constructivist learning
Active learning
Collaborative learning
Multimodal literacy education
Recursive feedback and reflection

The module encourages learners to become active producers of knowledge rather than passive consumers of information. Students engage in collaborative discussion, critical analysis, and multimedia production.

At the end of this module, learners should be able to:

Define multimodal communication and multimodal literacy.
Analyze how meaning is created through text, visuals, sound, gestures, and digital media.
Critically evaluate examples of multimodal communication from social media or educational platforms.
Create a multimodal project that combines different modes of communication.
Reflect on how multimodal learning affects communication and learning.

Think about the last time you watched a TikTok video, viewed an infographic, or listened to a podcast. Did communication happen only through words? Probably not. Colors, music, gestures, images, captions, and design also helped communicate meaning.

Multimodal communication happens when multiple forms of communication work together to create meaning. These modes may include:
