In the past, literacy mainly focused on reading and writing printed texts, but this is no longer enough to prepare students for communication in modern society. Today, students interact with information through videos, images, social media, audio recordings, animations, digital platforms, and interactive technologies. Because of these changes, educators and researchers have emphasized the importance of multimodal literacies.

Multimodal literacies refer to the ability to understand, interpret, create, and communicate meaning using different modes of representation such as language, visuals, sound, gestures, spatial design, and digital media. This concept recognizes that communication is no longer limited to written or spoken language alone. Learners now create meaning through combinations of images, videos, symbols, movement, audio, and text. Multimodal literacies therefore play an important role in teaching and learning because they help students become effective communicators in digital and social environments.

This paper discusses the concept of multimodal literacies, including its theories, research foundations, and practical applications in education. It also analyzes examples of multimodal literacies in pedagogical practice, including digital storytelling, video learning, social media learning, and collaborative multimedia projects. The discussion highlights how multimodal approaches support engagement, creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and inclusive learning. At the same time, this paper also examines the challenges and limitations of implementing multimodal literacies in schools.

Multimodal literacies refer to the use of multiple modes of communication to create and interpret meaning. According to the New London Group (1996), literacy pedagogy should move beyond traditional print literacy and include “multiliteracies,” which address the diversity of communication channels and cultural contexts in modern society. Multimodal literacies involve the integration of linguistic, visual, audio, spatial, and gestural modes of meaning.

Gunther Kress (2010), one of the leading scholars in multimodality, explains that communication is always shaped by different modes working together. For example, a YouTube educational video combines spoken language, written captions, music, visuals, movement, and design elements to communicate meaning effectively. Learners therefore need the ability to analyze and create texts using different forms of representation.

Unlike traditional literacy, multimodal literacy recognizes that people can express and understand ideas in many different ways. Instead of focusing only on reading printed texts and writing essays, multimodal literacy encourages students to create digital presentations, infographics, podcasts, videos, comics, animations, and interactive projects. Through these practices, learners develop communication skills that are more relevant to contemporary society.

The concept of multiliteracies was introduced by the New London Group (1996), a group of scholars who argued that literacy education must respond to changes in technology, communication, and globalization. They proposed that literacy pedagogy should include cultural diversity and multiple modes of communication. According to the group, students should not only consume information but also become active designers of meaning.

The multiliteracies framework introduced four pedagogical components:

Situated Practice – Learning through meaningful experiences connected to learners’ lives.
Overt Instruction – Guided teaching and scaffolding from teachers.
Critical Framing – Encouraging learners to analyze social, cultural, and political meanings.
Transformed Practice – Applying knowledge creatively in new contexts.

These components emphasize active, reflective, and socially meaningful learning.

Social Semiotics

Another important theoretical foundation is social semiotics, which studies how people create meaning through signs and symbols in social contexts. Kress and van Leeuwen (2006) explain that images, sounds, gestures, and spatial arrangements function as systems of meaning just like language. This theory supports multimodal literacy because it recognizes that communication occurs through multiple sign systems.

For example, in a classroom presentation, students communicate meaning not only through spoken words but also through images, gestures, slide designs, and visual organization. Meaning is therefore shaped by the interaction of different modes.

Constructivism and Multimodal Learning

Constructivist learning theory also supports multimodal literacies. Constructivism suggests that learners actively construct knowledge through experiences and interactions. Multimodal learning encourages students to participate actively in meaning-making rather than passively receiving information.

For instance, when students create digital stories or multimedia presentations, they analyze information, make design choices, collaborate with peers, and reflect on how best to communicate their ideas. This process strengthens critical thinking and creativity.

Multimodal Literacies in Pedagogical Practice

1. Digital Storytelling

Digital storytelling is one of the most common examples of multimodal literacies in education. In this activity, students create stories using combinations of text, images, narration, music, and video. Digital storytelling allows learners to express ideas creatively while developing communication and technological skills.

For example, students may create a short video presentation about environmental conservation using photographs, narration, subtitles, and background music. Through this activity, learners practice writing scripts, organizing information, selecting visuals, and using digital tools.
