A museum installs Bluetooth beacons throughout its galleries. As a visitor walks near an exhibit, their phone receives a short audio story, a related quiz question, or a reflective prompt — no login, no syllabus, no scheduled class. The environment is the curriculum. This model is already deployed at institutions like the Smithsonian and the Natural History Museum London through their mobile companion apps.

Smart home devices also participate in ambient learning — a child asking “why is the sky blue?” while drawing at the kitchen table receives an immediate, contextualised answer. This is informal, lifewide, and deeply IoT-enabled.

Key characteristics of ambient learning include:

Context-aware: content is triggered by location, time, or behaviour

IoT-enabled: sensors and smart objects carry embedded pedagogy

Always-on: learning occurs without formal “sessions” or registration

Informal and lifewide: it spans home, community, and work environments
