Reflecting on both lesson evaluation forms made me realize that they actually share many similarities in philosophy and purpose. Both systems encourage teachers to reflect on children’s participation, engagement, understanding, and classroom experiences after every lesson. They also ask teachers to evaluate their own strategies and identify areas for improvement. In both Singapore and the Philippines, lesson evaluation recognizes that effective teaching in early childhood education is not only about meeting objectives, but also about understanding how children learn, interact, and develop through meaningful experiences. This reflects the idea that evaluation should support learning and continuous improvement rather than simply function as a compliance requirement.

However, I noticed that Singapore’s evaluation approach places stronger emphasis on systematic documentation, evidence-based reflection, and continuous quality improvement. The lesson evaluation forms I used in Singapore allowed teachers to provide detailed observations about children’s learning dispositions, differentiated learning experiences, extension of learning, and individualized developmental needs. This aligns with Singapore’s SPARK 2.0 framework and Quality Teaching Tool developed by the Early Childhood Development Agency, where preschools regularly conduct self-appraisals using classroom observations, documentation of children’s learning, stakeholder feedback, and reflective planning to improve educational quality and children’s well-being. These systems encouraged teachers to become more reflective practitioners while maintaining clear educational standards and accountability.

At the same time, I also believe that Philippine early childhood education is gradually moving toward similar reflective and child-centered practices. The MATATAG Kindergarten Curriculum of the Department of Education emphasizes developmentally appropriate practice, play-based learning, contextualized instruction, and holistic child development. Teachers are encouraged to use observations, anecdotal records, portfolios, and reflective lesson evaluation to better understand children’s learning needs and experiences. More schools are also beginning to integrate authentic assessment, parent communication, and documentation practices that support continuous monitoring of children’s growth and learning. Although challenges such as teacher workload, large class sizes, and limited resources still exist, I can see sincere efforts toward improving reflective teaching and meaningful evaluation practices in Philippine early childhood education.

Reflecting further on lesson evaluation also made me think about the importance of maintaining quality standards in reflective practice itself. Jennifer Greene discussed the concept of meta-evaluation, or the evaluation of evaluations, which examines how good, effective, and credible an evaluation process actually is. Greene explained that meta-evaluation involves establishing quality criteria, reviewing methods used, identifying the purpose and audience of evaluation, and determining whether evaluations genuinely support improvement and accountability. This idea resonated with me because reflective lesson evaluation should not simply be completed for documentation purposes; it should also be evaluated to ensure that it remains meaningful, evidence-based, and supportive of children’s learning and teacher growth. In early childhood education, this means asking whether reflection tools truly help teachers understand children better, improve instruction, and maintain educational standards. Through this lens, I realized that reflective lesson evaluation itself must continuously evolve and improve to remain relevant and effective in supporting quality education.

Ultimately, comparing both systems helped me appreciate how reflective lesson evaluation plays an essential role in improving early childhood education. I believe the Philippines is already making meaningful progress toward stronger reflective and evidence-based teaching practices. With continued support, professional development, and investment in teachers, lesson evaluation can become even more holistic, learner-centered, and responsive to children’s developmental needs. More importantly, evaluation should not simply focus on whether objectives were achieved, but should guide continuous reflection, professional learning, and the creation of meaningful learning experiences that support children’s overall growth and well-being.
