Title: Epistemic Agency: The Metacognitive Engine of E-Learning Ecologies

In the discourse of e-learning ecologies, we often focus on the what (content) and the how (technology). However, we frequently overlook the who—specifically, the learner’s capacity to navigate the nature of knowledge itself. I propose we explore Epistemic Agency as a critical metacognitive concept.

Epistemic agency refers to the learner’s ability to take responsibility for the advancement of their own knowledge, recognizing that knowledge is not a static commodity to be consumed, but a social and intellectual construct to be negotiated.

Unlike self-regulated learning, which focuses on the management of tasks, epistemic agency focuses on the management of *ideas*. It involves the learner asking: "How do I know what I know?" and "What evidence is required to validate this claim?" In a MOOC environment, where information is abundant and often contradictory, exercising epistemic agency allows a learner to move beyond rote memorization toward a sophisticated understanding of how different disciplines construct truth.

Consider a learner in a data science course. Instead of merely following a coding tutorial, a learner with high epistemic agency questions the underlying assumptions of the dataset provided. They might seek out alternative data sources, compare methodologies with peers in the discussion forums, and synthesize these findings into a critique of the original model.

By doing so, they are not just learning to code; they are participating in the scientific community’s process of knowledge creation. This transforms the MOOC from a lecture hall into a laboratory of inquiry.
