A massive database of questions that have been "pre-tested" to determine their difficulty level and discrimination index (how well they distinguish between high and low performers). It has a standards in every student that receives the same instructions, the same time limits, and is graded against the same rubric. This removes "teacher bias" from the equation. In strengths, Standardized tests are at their best when they are used as a diagnostic flashlight rather than a punitive hammer. Without standardized data, it’s much harder to prove that a school in an impoverished zip code is being underserved compared to a wealthy one. And lastly in weaknesses, Standardized tests fail when they become "High-Stakes"—meaning a single score determines graduation, teacher pay, or school funding. If it’s not on the test, it’s not in the classroom. Art, music, and physical education often get squeezed out to make room for "test prep." A test is a single data point on a single day. If a student is sick, hungry, or grieving, the test measures their state of mind, not their ability. Despite best efforts, questions often reflect the cultural experiences of the majority. For example, a word problem about "regatta racing" assumes a level of vocabulary that isn't universal. Instead of learning how to think, students learn how to eliminate wrong answers and manage a timer. And in peers perspective, Think of a standardized test like a thermometer. A thermometer is great at telling you if you have a fever (the data), but it’s a terrible tool for actually curing the flu (the instruction). If we spend all our time staring at the thermometer and none of the time resting or taking medicine, we shouldn't be surprised when the temperature doesn't go down!
