Furthermore, existing research tends to overlook the transformation of natural evolutionary processes into artificially constructed systems of hierarchy and control within such narratives. There is also a noticeable lack of comparative studies that analyze how different dystopian texts reinterpret evolutionary theory in distinct ways—particularly the contrast between technological manipulation of evolution in Huxley’s work and socially driven evolutionary outcomes in Wells’ narrative.

Methodology

This study adopts a qualitative and comparative approach. The primary texts analyzed are Brave New World and The Time Machine. Close textual analysis is used to examine representations of evolution, supported by theoretical frameworks and secondary sources.

Discussion

The dystopian societies depicted in Brave New World and The Time Machine present contrasting yet interconnected interpretations of evolutionary theory. In Brave New World, evolution is no longer a natural biological process but a technologically controlled system. Human beings are artificially produced through the Bokanovsky Process, eliminating individuality and natural variation. The governing motto, “Community, Identity, Stability,” reflects a society structured around control and uniformity rather than natural development.

This artificial manipulation of evolution aligns with Michel Foucault’s idea that “power is exercised over life itself,” indicating that modern systems regulate not only behavior but biological existence. In Huxley’s dystopia, this control extends to psychological conditioning, where individuals are taught to accept their roles unquestioningly. As the text states, “Everyone belongs to everyone else,” suggesting the complete erasure of personal identity and autonomy.

In contrast, The Time Machine presents evolution as a natural process shaped by environmental and social conditions. The division between the Eloi and the Morlocks represents the long-term consequences of class inequality. Wells describes the Eloi as “mere fatted cattle,” emphasizing their physical and intellectual degeneration due to the absence of struggle. This reflects Darwin’s principle that survival depends on adaptation, but Wells extends it to show how social structures influence evolutionary outcomes.
