When to Use Each Approach

Intelligence Testing is Appropriate when:

Identifying learning disabilities or giftedness.

Predicting a person's ability to learn new, complex tasks in an unfamiliar field.

Knowledge Testing is Appropriate when:

Knowledge Testing is Inappropriate when:

Assessing someone who hasn't had access to the material (it measures opportunity, not "smarts").

Trying to predict success in a field that requires high-level abstract reasoning not covered by the facts.

Example: Raven’s Progressive Matrices (RPM)

Raven’s Progressive Matrices is a widely used non-verbal intelligence test designed to measure fluid intelligence ($gf$)—the ability to think logically and solve problems in novel situations, independent of acquired knowledge.

How it Works

The test consists of visual geometric designs with a missing piece. The test-taker must choose the correct piece from a set of options to complete the pattern.

Non-Verbal: It does not require reading or writing.
Progressive: The puzzles start very simple and become increasingly complex, requiring more sophisticated abstract reasoning as the test progresses.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:

Reduced Cultural Bias: Because it relies on shapes rather than language or specific historical facts, it is considered more "culture-fair" than tests like the SAT or GRE.
Ease of Administration: It can be given to large groups and is relatively quick to score.
Pure Measure: It is excellent at isolating abstract reasoning from linguistic ability.

Weaknesses:

One-Dimensional: It measures "Spearman’s g" (general intelligence) but ignores other forms of intelligence, such as emotional, creative, or practical intelligence.
Stress Sensitivity: Like all timed tests, performance can be hindered by "test anxiety," which may not reflect the person’s actual cognitive ceiling.
Learnability: While it tests "innate" logic, individuals can become better at these specific types of puzzles with practice, potentially inflating their scores.
