Release Notes — Bulk Student Enrollment

We've added a new way for teachers to get their classes into the system

quickly, without running into the account-creation limits that are

normally in place to block spam sign-ups.

What's new

Bulk Enrollment for teachers

Teachers who have been granted the new "bulk enrollment" permission

will see a new Enroll Students tab inside their project's Member

Management area. From here they can create many student accounts at

once and (optionally) add those students to the current project as

members in a single step.

Import from a spreadsheet

Instead of typing each student in by hand, teachers can now upload a

CSV file (the format most spreadsheet programs like Excel and Google

Sheets can save to) and the form will fill itself in. A "Download

template" link is provided so teachers can start from a correctly

formatted blank sheet. The importer is forgiving about column names —

for example "First Name", "firstname", "first_name", and "given name"

are all recognized. Extra columns that aren't needed are simply

ignored, and the teacher is told about anything that was skipped.

Clear feedback

After an import or a create action, teachers see a plain-language

status message: how many students were imported, how many accounts

were created, and — if anything went wrong with an individual row

(like a duplicate email address) — exactly which row had the problem

and why. One bad row no longer stops the rest of the batch.

Helpful guardrails

The form checks for common problems before anything is sent to the

server: missing names, invalid email addresses, passwords that don't

meet the strength requirements, and duplicate email addresses within

the same form. Problem rows are highlighted so they're easy to find

and fix.

Sensible limits

To keep the system healthy, there's a cap of 100 students per

submission and 500 per teacher per day. If a teacher pastes in a

larger roster, the tool tells them to split it into smaller batches.

A quiet audit log records each successful bulk creation for

administrators to review later.

How teachers get access

The bulk enrollment permission is granted by a system administrator on

a per-teacher basis. Once granted, the new Enroll Students tab appears

immediately — the teacher does not need to log out and back in. The

same is true when the permission is removed.

Under the hood (for administrators)

- The new permission is a separate toggle from the existing

administrator permissions and is controlled only by system admins.

- The bulk-creation path is authenticated and respects normal project

roles, so only a project's creator or a local administrator of that

project can enroll students into it.

- The anti-spam protections that apply to public sign-ups are not

affected or weakened by this feature. Bulk creations happen through

a separate, audited path that requires an authenticated teacher with

the new permission.

- The permission and audit trail are preserved correctly across login,

logout, and the "Login As" feature that administrators use to

troubleshoot on behalf of a user.

What teachers should know

- Passwords are set by the teacher at the time of creation and should

be distributed to students through a secure, out-of-band channel

(printed handout, direct email, etc.). Passwords must be at least 8

characters and include an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, and

a digit.

- If a student's email address is already in use, that row will fail

with a clear message, but the other students in the batch will still

be created.

- The "Auto-enroll" toggle controls whether newly created students are

automatically added to the current project as members. It's on by

default.
