Multimodal literacy, on the other hand, reflects real-world communication more accurately. It prepares students to navigate complex information environments and become more effective communicators. For teachers, integrating multimodal analysis into instruction helps bridge the gap between classroom learning and students’ everyday experiences, making education more meaningful and practical.

In my experience as a teacher, I see multimodal communication as an important part of both my life and my students’ daily interactions, especially through short-form videos, messaging applications, and classroom materials. For example, when my students watch a short video on platforms like YouTube or TikTok, I notice that they do not rely on spoken words alone to understand the message. Instead, they pay attention to the combination of voice, on-screen text, background music, facial expressions, and video editing. I realize that these elements work together to make the content more engaging and easier to understand. Even if the words are simple, the energy of the music and the speaker’s gestures can make the message more motivating. I also observe this in messaging applications, where a simple response such as “Okay” can carry different meanings depending on how it is presented. The use of emojis, for instance, helps express tone and emotion, making the message feel more friendly or lighthearted rather than cold.

In my classroom, I also practice multimodal communication through the use of PowerPoint presentations. I combine text, images, colors, and my own explanations to help my students understand the lesson better. I have noticed that when I use too much text, my students tend to lose focus, but when I include visuals and explain them clearly, they become more engaged. I also see how educational videos support learning, as students are able to hear explanations, see examples, and read subtitles at the same time. Even outside the classroom, I recognize multimodal communication in advertisements, where images, music, and slogans work together to influence how people feel and respond.

Through these experiences, I have come to understand that meaning is not created through words alone but through the interaction of multiple modes. This makes multimodal analysis very useful for me as a teacher because it helps me better understand how my students interpret information and how I can design more effective lessons. Compared to traditional literacy, which focuses mainly on reading and writing, multimodal literacy is more reflective of real-life communication and allows my students to develop a wider range of skills that they can use both inside and outside the classroom.
