If a four-year-old wants to write a story about a "dragon" and writes "JRGN," the teacher celebrates that they communicated a thought rather than correcting the spelling. The idea is that language should be kept "whole" and meaningful, not broken into boring, tiny pieces.

Strengths

Love for Reading: It makes literacy fun! Kids see books as stories and adventures, not just a series of sounds they have to decode.

Confidence: By using invented spelling, children feel like successful authors early on. They aren't afraid to take risks.
