A powerful example of critical literacy in practice involves a preschool teacher using "Problem-Posing" with picture books. During a read-aloud of a popular fairy tale like Cinderella, rather than just asking students to predict what happens next (a functional skill), the teacher asks: "Why does Cinderella have to do all the work while the others sit down?" or "Do you think it’s fair that only the person with the 'right' foot gets the prize?"

By questioning the fairness of the story, the children began to discuss chores and gender roles in their own homes. This led to a project where the class "rewrote" the ending, where Cinderella and the stepsisters started a business together instead of waiting for a prince.

The strengths of this approach in ECE are significant. It honors children’s innate sense of fairness and helps them develop "agency"—the feeling that they can change things that aren't right. However, a weakness is that it requires a highly skilled teacher to keep the conversation age-appropriate without becoming overly "preachy." When comparing the two, Functional Literacy is the foundation; it focuses on the mechanics of language so a child can follow instructions and navigate a classroom. Both approaches are similar in that they rely on high-quality texts and adult modeling.

However, the differences are found in the power dynamic. Functional literacy views the child as a "vessel" to be filled with pre-determined skills. In contrast, Critical Literacy views the child as a social actor. While the functional approach asks, "What is this letter?", the critical approach asks, "What is this story doing to us?" In early childhood, the most effective pedagogy merges the two, ensuring children have the technical tools to read words and the critical tools to read the world.
