An essential site of multimodal communication in my students' lives is the short-form video platform, specifically TikTok and Instagram Reels. In these spaces, communication is never just about text or even just video; it is a complex "mash-up" of auditory, visual, gestural, and linguistic modes. Students do not just consume content; they decode a symphony of overlaid text, background music that carries specific cultural meanings, and visual filters that alter the tone of the message.

A multimodal analysis of meaning is incredibly useful in this context because it reveals the layers of intent that a simple transcript would miss. For example, a student might post a video with a serious face (gestural mode) but use a comedic audio track (auditory mode) and sarcastic captions (written mode). To understand the "meaning," one cannot look at the text alone. By performing a multimodal analysis, we can teach students to see how these different modes complement or contradict one another, allowing them to become more critical consumers of media who can spot manipulation or nuanced irony.

This differs significantly from traditional notions of literacy, which are often mono-modal and linear. Traditional literacy focuses heavily on the written word on a page—reading from left to right, top to bottom. It prioritizes grammar, syntax, and long-form logical argumentation. In contrast, multimodal literacy is synaesthetic and non-linear. It requires the ability to process multiple sensory inputs simultaneously. While traditional literacy values the "finality" of a printed book, multimodal literacy in these digital sites values "remixing"—the idea that a piece of communication is just a building block for someone else to respond to with their own video.

Moving forward, educators must bridge this gap. If we only teach students how to analyze essays, we leave them "illiterate" in the digital worlds they inhabit for hours every day. We must integrate the analysis of visual and auditory design into our curriculum to prepare them for the modern communicative landscape.
