Didactic pedagogy refers to a teacher-centered approach where knowledge is transmitted directly from an authority (teacher, system, or curriculum) to the learner. In Duolingo, the “teacher” is the app itself: it presents vocabulary, grammar rules, and sentence structures in a structured, step-by-step sequence. Learners are expected to absorb this information and demonstrate understanding through repetition-based exercises like translation, multiple choice, and fill-in-the-blank tasks.

This model has several strengths. First, it is highly accessible and scalable. Anyone with a smartphone can engage in structured learning without needing a human instructor, which makes it particularly valuable in contexts where educational resources are limited. Second, it provides clarity and efficiency. Learners know exactly what to do at each stage, and the clear progression system helps reduce confusion. Third, repetition and immediate feedback—core features of didactic approaches—are effective for memorization and foundational skill-building, especially in areas like vocabulary acquisition or basic grammar. For beginners, this can build confidence and create a sense of achievement through small, measurable progress.

However, the limitations are equally significant. Didactic pedagogy often positions learners as passive recipients rather than active constructors of knowledge. In the case of language apps, learners may become proficient at recognizing patterns or completing exercises but struggle to apply the language in real-life, spontaneous communication. The lack of meaningful social interaction also limits deeper learning, as language is inherently social and contextual. Additionally, this approach tends to prioritize correct answers over critical thinking, creativity, or cultural understanding. Learners may know “what is right” without fully understanding “why” or “how” to use knowledge flexibly.
