The word "formative" means "to shape," so the purpose of this assessment is to shape and improve learning while it is still happening.

Unlike summative assessment (like final exams or grades) which evaluates what has been learned, formative assessment provides ongoing feedback to both teachers and students. It helps identify what students already know, where they are struggling, and what needs to be taught next. It creates a cycle: teaching \rightarrow checking understanding \rightarrow giving feedback \rightarrow adjusting teaching or study habits \rightarrow checking again.

This concept is central to recursive feedback because it ensures that information flows continuously. Students receive feedback on their progress, which they use to improve, and their improved performance generates new data for further assessment. It turns evaluation into a tool for learning itself, not just a way to measure it.

Example in Practice

A classic example of formative assessment in action is the use of Exit Tickets or Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down in a classroom, or Checkpoint Quizzes in an online course.

For instance, in an online lesson, after watching a video or reading a material, the student is presented with a short, low-stakes quiz or a question.

- If the student answers correctly: The system or teacher gives positive feedback and confirms understanding. The student feels confident and moves forward.

- If the student answers incorrectly: Immediate feedback is given explaining why it was wrong and guiding them back to the correct concept. The student can then review the material and try again.

Another example is when a teacher walks around while students are working and observes their progress, asking questions like "How did you get that answer?" or "Can you explain this part?" This allows the teacher to intervene right away if there is a misunderstanding, preventing errors from becoming permanent habits.
