Multiliteracies is a pedagogical approach that expands the traditional definition of literacy, which used to focus only on reading and writing. In the context of our modern, digital, and culturally diverse world, multiliteracies acknowledges that meaning is made and communicated through many different modes and channels.

This concept was developed by the New London Group in 1996 to address two major changes: the increasing cultural and linguistic diversity in societies, and the explosion of new communication technologies. Therefore, being "literate" today means being able to read, interpret, and create meaning not just through written text, but also through visual images, audio, gestures, spatial arrangements, and digital media.

Multiliteracies emphasize that different modes work together (multimodality) to create meaning. For example, a website conveys information through a combination of words, layout, colors, images, and videos. A student who is multiliterate understands how these elements interact to convey a message or persuade an audience.

Example in Practice

A perfect example of multiliteracies in practice is the creation of an Infographic or a Digital Story.

Instead of writing a traditional essay to explain a concept, students are asked to create an infographic. In doing so, they must:

1. Linguistic: Write clear and concise text.

2. Visual: Choose appropriate colors, fonts, images, and layout to make the information attractive and easy to understand.

3. Spatial: Organize the elements logically so the eye flows naturally from one point to the next.

Another example is using video presentations. Here, students also utilize Audio (tone of voice, music) and Gestural modes (body language, facial expressions) to enhance their message.

By engaging in these activities, students learn that communication is multimodal. They develop the skills to navigate and produce content for the complex media landscape they live in, which is essential for active participation in the 21st century.
