A crucial element of scaffolding often missed in practice is Fading. For scaffolding to be successful, the support must be gradually removed as the student gains competence (Pearson & Gallagher, 1983). If the support remains indefinitely, it becomes a "crutch" rather than a "scaffold."

With the rise of Educational Technology (EdTech), scaffolding has moved beyond the physical classroom. Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) and interactive simulations offer "just-in-time" support.

Research by Reiser (2004) suggests that scaffolding does more than just make a task easier; it actually "problematizes" the content. By structuring the task, the scaffold directs the student's attention to the specific complexities they need to master, rather than letting them wander aimlessly.

However, researchers like Tabak (2004) argue for Synergistic Scaffolding, where multiple types of support (a teacher's hint, a peer's feedback, and a software prompt) work together to create a robust learning environment.
