ql-align-justify"> We all know that in the 21^st century, learning has evolved beyond traditional reading and writing to include a wide range of digital and multimodal practices. Today’s learners are expected to engage with new media and digital media to construct meaning through various formats such as text, images, diagrams, tables, datasets, videos, and audio recordings. This shift reflects the growing importance of multiliteracies, which emphasize the ability to interpret and produce meaning across diverse communication channels.

Multimodal meaning involves the integration of different modes of communication to enhance understanding. One important aspect of this process is visual learning, where images, graphs, and infographics help simplify complex information. Similarly, video learning enables students to observe real-life applications and demonstrations, making abstract concepts easier to understand.

A practical example in my teaching experience is when I replaced a traditional reading activity with a multimodal project. Instead of asking students to simply read a story and answer comprehension questions, I tasked them to create a short digital presentation. They combined text summaries, images, voice recordings, and short video clips to retell the story in their own way. Some students used platforms like Canva and PowerPoint, while others recorded narration using their mobile phones. This activity not only improved their understanding of the story but also enhanced their creativity, collaboration, and digital skills.

A key concept connected to multimodal meaning is the cognitive ability to shift between different modes of understanding, sometimes referred to as synesthesia in learning. This allows learners to move from reading text to interpreting visuals or listening to audio seamlessly, strengthening comprehension and retention. As stated by the New London Group, “literacy pedagogy now must account for the burgeoning variety of text forms associated with information and multimedia technologies”.

To conclude, the integration of digital tools and multimodal approaches transforms how knowledge is created and shared. By developing skills in using new media, learners become active producers of knowledge, capable of expressing ideas creatively and effectively across multiple platforms.
