Positive Reinforcement

In the framework of behaviorism, positive reinforcement is the process of strengthening a specific behavior by providing a motivating stimulus immediately after the behavior is exhibited. This makes the behavior more likely to reoccur in the future. Unlike bribery, which happens before the act, reinforcement is a contingent consequence designed to "shape" performance.

In Practice:

Imagine a primary school classroom where a student, who typically struggles to stay on task, completes a math worksheet independently. The teacher immediately places a gold star on the paper and gives the student a verbal "high-five." Because the praise (stimulus) followed the completion of the work (behavior), the student is statistically more likely to attempt the next worksheet with similar focus.

Commentary on Foundational Notions

Skinner and Free Will: B.F. Skinner famously argued that free will is largely an illusion. He suggested that what we perceive as "choice" is actually the result of our unique reinforcement histories. To Skinner, we don't "choose" to study; we study because past studying was reinforced by good grades or social approval.

The Role of the Teacher: In a behaviorist scheme, the teacher acts as an educational engineer. They are responsible for arranging the environment and the "contingencies of reinforcement" to ensure that students acquire the desired behaviors (learning objectives) efficiently.

Nature vs. Nurture: Behaviorism sits firmly on the nurture side of the aisle. It posits that while biological "hardware" exists, the vast majority of human behavior is "programmed" by environmental interactions and experiences.
