ql-align-justify">One effective pedagogy for increasing learners’ understanding of how computing works in the Philippine Senior High School context is project-based learning (PBL) integrated with block-based programming platforms such as Scratch. In many schools offering the ICT strand under the K to 12 curriculum, students are introduced to fundamental computing concepts—such as algorithms, sequencing, loops, and conditionals—through the creation of simple interactive projects like animations, games, and simulations. Using Scratch, learners visually manipulate code blocks instead of writing complex syntax, allowing them to focus on logic and problem-solving. For instance, students may be tasked to design a simple educational game that demonstrates scientific concepts, requiring them to apply computational thinking while engaging in meaningful, context-based tasks.

From an evaluative perspective, this pedagogy is highly effective in making abstract computing concepts more accessible and engaging. The combination of PBL and a visual programming platform supports active learning, as students learn by doing, experimenting, and iterating on their outputs. It also aligns with constructivist principles, where learners build knowledge through hands-on experiences and reflection (Papert, 1980). Moreover, Scratch promotes collaboration, as students often work in groups, share projects, and provide peer feedback—fostering both technical and social learning skills. In the Philippine setting, where learners have diverse levels of prior exposure to technology, this approach reduces cognitive barriers and builds confidence, especially among beginners.

However, there are also limitations that need to be considered. While Scratch is effective for introducing foundational concepts, it may not fully prepare students for more advanced, text-based programming required in higher education or industry settings. Additionally, the success of this pedagogy depends heavily on teacher competence in facilitating PBL and integrating technology effectively. Issues such as limited computer access, inconsistent internet connectivity, and large class sizes in public schools may also hinder implementation. Despite these challenges, the integration of project-based learning with block-based programming platforms remains a practical and impactful approach in helping Filipino learners understand how computing works, particularly when supported by continuous teacher training and appropriate infrastructure.
