Distributed Cognition (often referred to as Distributed Intelligence) is the concept that human knowledge and thinking do not reside solely within an individual's mind but are spread across people, social environments, and physical or digital tools. In the context of our e-Learning Ecologies MOOC, this means that "learning" isn't just about what you memorize; it’s about how you interact with the interface, the course materials, and your fellow peers to solve a problem.

Defining the Concept

Unlike traditional cognitive science, which views the brain as a lone processor, Distributed Cognition (dCog) suggests that intelligence is an emergent property of a system. Think of it like a symphony: the "music" doesn't exist in just the violin or the sheet music; it exists in the interaction between the conductor, the musicians, the instruments, and the acoustics of the room. In an e-learning environment, your intelligence is "augmented" by the search engines you use, the forums where you ask questions, and the shared documents where you co-create knowledge.

The Concept in Practice: The Modern Aviation Cockpit

A classic example often cited by researcher Edwin Hutchins is the navigation of a large ship or a commercial airplane. A pilot doesn't fly a plane through raw brainpower alone. Their "intelligence" is distributed across:

Technical Tools: Altimeters, GPS, and autopilot systems.
Social Protocols: Communication with Air Traffic Control and the co-pilot.
Physical Artifacts: Checklists and flight manuals that store "past wisdom."

In our MOOC, when we use a Wiki or a shared Google Doc to brainstorm, we are practicing distributed cognition. The document becomes an external memory source, allowing us to process more complex ideas than any one of us could hold in our heads at once.

Why It Matters for e-Learning

As we move toward Recursive Feedback and Multimodal Meaning, understanding dCog helps us design better "learning ecologies." We stop focusing on "testing" what's inside a student's head and start valuing how well they can navigate a network of information to find a solution.
