IoT refers to a network of physical objects—"things"—embedded with sensors, software, and connectivity that allows them to collect and exchange data over the internet.

When applied to education, IoT transforms the physical environment into a responsive learning tool. It moves beyond just "using a laptop" to a world where the classroom itself, the student’s wearable devices, and even campus equipment are constantly interacting to provide real-time feedback and personalized content.

A prime example of IoT in practice is the Smart Science Laboratory. Imagine a chemistry lab where every piece of equipment is sensor-enabled. As a student performs an experiment, the sensors track their movements, the temperature of the chemicals, and the duration of the reaction.

If a student makes a mistake that could be hazardous, the system sends an instant alert to their smartwatch. Furthermore, the data collected from the experiment is automatically uploaded to the student's ePortfolio, allowing them to analyze their results at home on a different device. This creates a seamless "ecology" where the physical act of learning is digitally recorded and analyzed without manual input.

IoT fosters a "lifewide" learning experience. It bridges the gap between formal schooling and informal practice. By collecting data from the real world, educators can understand how students learn in real-time, rather than waiting for an end-of-term exam.
