In my life as a student, an important site of multimodal communication is the use of various online learning platforms such as Coursera, Google Classroom, Canvas, and Google Meet or Zoom. Through these platforms, information is not conveyed through words alone, but also through images, videos, audio, and interactive elements such as quizzes and discussion forums. This type of communication demonstrates multimodality, which refers to the integration of different modes of expression to construct deeper and more comprehensive meaning.

The use of multimodal analysis is essential in understanding how meaning is formed within these platforms. For example, in a video lecture, it is not enough to comprehend only the spoken words of the teacher; it is also necessary to examine visual aids such as diagrams and animations, as well as the teacher’s gestures, which enhance understanding. In this way, learning becomes more effective because information is presented in multiple forms that cater to diverse learning styles among students (Jewitt, 2021). Furthermore, multimodal analysis helps both teachers and students become more critical in interpreting communication in the digital world, which is particularly important in a time when information is fast-paced and multidimensional (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2020).

Moreover, traditional literacy primarily focuses on an individual’s ability to read and write text. It is limited to the textual form of communication. In contrast, multimodal literacy has a broader scope as it recognizes the importance of various modes such as visual, audio, spatial, and gestural forms of expression (Cope & Kalantzis, 2022). For example, in a traditional classroom setting, teaching is often centered on reading and writing texts, whereas in multimodal learning, videos, images, and interactive activities are utilized to deepen understanding.

One example of this is the use of infographics in teaching poetry. Instead of merely explaining the meanings of complex words and relying solely on textual reading, a teacher may present an infographic with images that are relevant and connected to the poem, allowing students to visualize what is being described or implied. In this way, students can more easily understand the process, as they see it in visual form alongside verbal explanations. Through this approach, their knowledge and skills are developed not only in reading but also in critical and visual thinking.
