A makerspace is a collaborative, hands-on learning environment where students design, build, experiment, and create using a variety of materials ranging from simple classroom supplies to digital tools like coding platforms or robotics kits.

Makerspaces promote active knowledge-making because learners move beyond simply receiving information. Instead, they actively construct understanding through experience, creativity, and problem-solving. This approach is rooted in constructivist learning theory, which emphasizes that knowledge is built through interaction and reflection. In a makerspace, students become creators rather than passive learners, developing essential 21st-century skills such as collaboration, innovation, and critical thinking.

In my grade 6 classroom, a simple makerspace activity can be integrated into a Science lesson on ecosystems. Students work in groups to design and build a mini-ecosystem model using recycled materials such as plastic bottles, soil, small plants, and water. As they build, they explore relationships between living and non-living components, observe changes over time, and explain their findings through presentations.

This activity allow my students to:

Engage in inquiry and experimentation
Collaborate with peers
Apply concepts in a real-world context
Develop creativity using low-cost, accessible materials

Even in schools with limited resources, meaningful makerspace experiences are possible by maximizing locally available materials and encouraging student imagination.
