This approach does not justify crime. But it also refuses the romanticism of ignorance. If we want to understand crime, we have to be willing to see the emotional reality that sustains it.

How Emotion Short-Circuits Rationality

Modern neuroscience and social psychology have produced findings that support Katz's intuition.

The emotional activation that fires at the moment of decision temporarily suppresses the prefrontal cortex — the brain region that "runs the calculation." In plain terms: under intense emotional arousal, rational cost-benefit analysis goes offline.

Criminology has long ignored this reality. For the most part, it still does.

But if we genuinely want to understand why crime is committed — not merely correlate it with poverty, age, or neighbourhood — the question we need to ask is: what was that person feeling in that moment? How visible, how powerful, how real did they feel?

Stephen Lyng and Edgework: Living on the Edge

The name that carried Katz's emotional aesthetics one step further was Stephen Lyng.

Lyng's concept of Edgework makes the following claim: individuals living in modern society are confronted with a world that is excessively bureaucratised, brought under control, and drained of meaning. The sense of freedom gradually weakens. Existential insecurity becomes chronic.

According to Lyng, some individuals respond to this condition by using risk as a tool. On that razor-thin line between control and chaos — between death and survival, capture and freedom, collapse and mastery — they feel fully and genuinely themselves.

This is not exclusive to crime. Extreme sports, dangerous professions, speculative investment — Lyng identifies the same psychological structure in all of them. But crime remains the most visible, most costly, and most profoundly misunderstood expression of this structure.

Crime as Self-Actualisation: A Provocative but Necessary Conversation

At the peak of Maslow's hierarchy of needs sits "self-actualisation." Psychology associates this concept with creating art, achieving professional success, personal growth.

What Katz and Lyng are telling us is this: for some individuals — particularly under conditions where these "legitimate" channels are closed or feel meaningless — crime performs precisely that function.

The honour and belonging a young person finds in gang identity. The freedom and visibility a street artist discovers in illegal graffiti. The sense of mastery and control an offender experiences in the moment of a robbery.

Saying these things is not to legitimise crime. Saying these things is to take crime seriously as a human experience — to see offenders not as robots or monsters, but as meaning-seeking beings.

And without this perspective, no prevention policy can produce genuine transformation.

What Should Criminology Do?

Trying to explain crime exclusively through a list of risk factors ignores the emotional reality of crime. Deterrence policies so often fail for precisely this reason: because at the moment of the decision that leads to crime, no deterrence calculation is being run.

What Katz and Lyng add to our understanding is this: effective criminology and genuinely workable crime prevention policy must build a framework that also encompasses emotions, identities, and the search for meaning.

Crime is not always a miscalculation. Sometimes, seen from the offender's perspective, it is a flawed but intelligible existential strategy.

Is it enough to explain crime solely through rational choice theory?
