The term was introduced by cognitive anthropologists Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger in 1991, who observed that learning occurs most naturally when individuals engage in shared activities within a community. Wenger (1998) further developed the concept, describing Communities of Practice as groups of people who share a concern or passion for something they do and who "learn how to do it better as they interact regularly." Three defining characteristics mark a CoP: a shared domain of interest, a community that engages in joint activities and discussions, and a shared practice — accumulated knowledge, tools, and approaches developed over time.

A compelling example is online teacher communities such as the Facebook group Teachers Connect Philippines, where thousands of Filipino educators share lesson plans, teaching strategies, classroom management tips, and emotional support. New teachers learn from veterans not through formal training but through daily interaction, observation, and participation — what Lave and Wenger call legitimate peripheral participation, where beginners gradually move toward full membership in the community.

In e-learning environments, platforms like Coursera discussion forums and Scholar communities themselves function as Communities of Practice, where learners from diverse backgrounds co-construct knowledge through dialogue and shared experience.

Communities of Practice matter because they recognize that intelligence is not isolated within individuals — it is distributed across relationships and shared histories. When learners belong to a meaningful community, learning becomes not just an academic exercise but a lived, collaborative, and deeply human experience.
