The Sydney School genre approach, developed in Australia in the 1980s by linguists such as Jim Martin and Joan Rothery, is one of the most well-documented examples of functional literacy pedagogy in practice. It was explicitly designed to teach learners the text types or genres that confer social and academic power: reports, arguments, recounts, explanations, and procedures. Functional approaches start with the question "What is the purpose of this whole text?" and then move to "How is the whole text structured to meet these purposes?" Reading and writing are closely linked, and learners explore the ways different kinds of texts work to make different meanings in the world. The approach is organised around a "curriculum cycle" in which the teacher first builds learners' knowledge of a topic and genre, then deconstructs model texts together with the class, then jointly constructs a new text before learners attempt independent construction.

The primary strength of this approach is its explicit, equitable ambition. Functional approaches to literacy focus on students learning to read and compose the kinds of texts that enable them to succeed at school and in society. Rather than assuming that learners will absorb academic genres by osmosis an assumption that systematically advantages children from literate, middle-class homes , genre pedagogy makes the rules of powerful texts visible and teachable to all. Teachers model the expected type of writing by breaking it down into smaller components so that students can see all the elements, then complete a joint construction with students, which assists students to eventually complete the task independently. This scaffolded, gradual release model is particularly well suited to multilingual classrooms where learners cannot rely on home exposure to academic text forms.

Its weaknesses, however, are real. Critics claim that genre literacy is just the wolf of didactic pedagogy dressed in sheep's clothing, that it means learning formal language facts again, and that it risks leading back to authoritarian classrooms where some students find the authority congenial and succeed, while others find it uncongenial and fail. There is also an internal tension within the approach: teachers keep stumbling over important texts that simply do not fit the generic descriptions : What if something is not quite a report, not quite a recount, and not quite a procedure? The process of classification seems at times to be heading toward a new formalism, where the "correct" way to write a report is presented to students in the form of generic models. This risks replacing one kind of rigidity with another.

Functional literacy pedagogy sits meaningfully between didactic and authentic approaches. Where didactic pedagogy transmits decontextualised grammar rules and where authentic pedagogy trusts learners to acquire genres through free, meaning-driven writing, functional pedagogy explicitly teaches the social purposes and structural conventions of real-world text types ,bridging formal knowledge and communicative use. It is more structured than authentic pedagogy but more context-sensitive and purposeful than the didactic model, making it a particularly productive framework for classrooms where access to academic discourse cannot be taken for granted.
