Tasks that are too easy can be done independently, while tasks that are too difficult can be accomplished with the guidance from a "More Knowledgeable Other" (MKO).

The following are the core concepts of ZPD:

The Learner: Someone who is in the process of learning or acquiring new knowledge or skills.
More Knowledgeable Other (MKO): Can be a parent, teacher, coach, or peer with higher knowledge and ability in the specific tasks.
Scaffolding: The tailored, temporary support provided by the MKO that is gradually removed as the learner improves in proficiency. This can be a system or model like coaching, breaking down tasks, demonstration, and more.
Social Interactions: The author emphasizes that learning is a social process. Interactions and dialogues help learners move from guidance to independent mastery.
Internalization: knowledge starts as an external and social experience. Through communication and interaction, learners transform these external tools and construct to their own internal cognitive structures.

There are three levels of task difficulty:

Independent level: tasks that the learner can do independently (no growth learning)
Zone of Proximal Development: tasks requiring assistance or help (optimal learning)
Impossible level: tasks the learner cannot do yet, even with assistance or help (causes frustration)

Applications in learning:

Education: ZPD is used to identify where learners are, providing balanced challenges or tasks that prevent boredom or disengagement.
Development: ZPD is used to internalize knowledge, allowing learners to independently perform tasks eventually.
Instructional Strategies: MKO uses scaffolding to guide students through ZPD.
