An active learning concept that has not been discussed much yet is makerspaces. Makerspaces are learning environments where students actively create, design, and build projects using both physical and digital tools. These spaces can include materials like cardboard, art supplies, electronics, 3D printers, or coding tools. The main idea is that learning happens through hands-on making, rather than just listening or reading. Makerspaces are grounded in the principle of active knowledge making, where learners are not passive receivers of information but active creators. Instead of simply learning about a concept, students apply their understanding by building something meaningful. This aligns with constructivist and experiential learning theories, where knowledge is developed through experience, experimentation, and reflection.

In a makerspace approach, the role of the teacher shifts from being a lecturer to a facilitator or guide. Students are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and solve problems. This connects closely with inquiry learning and project-based learning, as students often work on open-ended tasks that require creativity and critical thinking. A clear example of makerspaces in practice can be seen in a science classroom where students are asked to design a simple model of a sustainable house. Instead of just reading about renewable energy, students build models using recycled materials and explain how their design reduces energy use. They may also create a short video or presentation to describe their work. In this activity, students combine visual, spatial, and linguistic literacies while applying real-world knowledge.

Another example is in technology education, where students use basic coding tools or robotics kits to create simple programs or machines. Through this, they learn not only technical skills but also problem-solving, collaboration, and innovation. These are important skills in what is often called the knowledge economy, where creativity and adaptability are highly valued. Makerspaces highlight several important features of active learning. First, they promote engagement, because students are directly involved in creating something meaningful. Second, they support collaboration, as many projects are done in groups where students share ideas and responsibilities. Third, they encourage iteration, meaning students learn through trial and error. Making mistakes becomes part of the learning process rather than something to avoid.

This approach also reflects the idea of learners as prosumers—both producers and consumers of knowledge. Students do not just consume information; they produce outputs that demonstrate their understanding. These outputs can be shared digitally, making learning more connected and visible. However, there are also challenges. Makerspaces require access to materials and resources, which may not always be available. They can also be time-consuming, and without proper guidance, students may focus more on the product than the learning goals. This means teachers need to carefully design tasks and provide clear objectives while still allowing creativity.

Makerspaces offer a strong example of how active learning can be meaningful, creative, and connected to real-life skills. By focusing on making and doing, students develop deeper understanding and become more engaged in their learning process.
