Platforms like Google Sites, Seesaw, and other learning management systems are commonly used to create and organize these portfolios. This method reflects modern approaches to assessment by focusing not only on final outputs but also on the learning process.

Digital portfolios work through three main stages: collection, selection, and reflection. First, students collect and upload their work regularly. These outputs may come from different activities related to reading, writing, speaking, and viewing. Second, students select the pieces that best represent their progress or strongest performances. This step encourages them to evaluate their own work and make decisions about what shows their learning most clearly. Finally, students write reflections for each selected piece. In these reflections, they explain what they learned, what challenges they encountered, and how they improved. Teachers then review the portfolio, provide feedback, and assess the student’s development using set criteria or rubrics. One of the main strengths of digital portfolios is that they support multimodal literacies. Unlike traditional assessments that focus mostly on written exams, digital portfolios allow students to communicate using different modes such as text, audio, visuals, and video. This is important because literacy today goes beyond reading and writing printed text. Students need to be able to express ideas in various formats, and digital portfolios give them the space to do that. As a result, students can demonstrate a broader range of skills and creativity. Another strength is that digital portfolios promote reflective learning. Students are not just completing tasks; they are thinking about their own learning process. Writing reflections helps them become more aware of their strengths and areas that need improvement. This type of self-assessment encourages responsibility and independence, which are important for lifelong learning. Despite these advantages, digital portfolios also have some weaknesses. One major challenge is access to technology. Not all students have reliable internet connections or devices, which can limit their participation. This may create inequality, especially in schools with limited resources.

Another issue is that digital portfolios can be time-consuming for both students and teachers. Students need to spend time organizing their work and writing reflections, while teachers must carefully review each portfolio. Without clear guidelines and structure, the process can become difficult to manage. There is also the challenge of consistent assessment. Because students submit different types of outputs, it can be harder to grade fairly. Teachers need to use clear rubrics and criteria to ensure that all students are assessed equally. Without this, evaluation may become subjective.

Digital portfolios also require a certain level of digital literacy. Students must know how to use online tools effectively, and teachers must be able to guide them. If either group lacks these skills, the effectiveness of the portfolio may be reduced. Digital portfolios provide a flexible and meaningful way to assess literacies. They highlight growth, encourage reflection, and support multiple forms of communication. While there are challenges, especially in terms of access and time, their benefits make them a valuable tool in modern education.
