The Practice: Learning to Write in a Filipino Secondary Classroom

Let me use writing instruction as my example, because it's one of the most common curriculum practices in Philippine schools and one where all three dynamics are often visible at once — though rarely named.

Mimesis is where most writing instruction begins. The teacher presents a model essay. Students are asked to identify its parts — introduction, body, conclusion — and then replicate the structure in their own work. This is imitation in the classical Aristotelian sense: learning through careful observation and reproduction of an established form. There is nothing wrong with this. Mimesis is efficient. It gives learners a scaffold, a template, a way in. For a student who has never written a formal argument before, being shown exactly what one looks like is genuinely useful — this is the explicitness that Delpit insists marginalized learners need and deserve.

The problem arises when mimesis never gets transcended. When "write an essay" permanently means "replicate this structure," students become technically competent but intellectually passive. They learn the form without ever inhabiting it.

Synthesis enters when the teacher begins connecting writing to the student's own experience and world. "Write about a problem in your community." "Argue for a change you want to see in your school." Now the student is not imitating a model — they are drawing on their own knowledge, interests, and identity as raw material. This is Dewey's experiential learning in action: relevance as the engine of engagement. Bruner's notion of making curriculum meaningful to the learner's existing cognitive framework lives here too.

But synthesis, as this module warns us, can plateau. If the student writes only about their world, from their perspective, never pushed beyond what they already know and feel, growth stalls. Relevance without challenge is comfortable but not transformative.

Reflexivity is what happens when the teacher introduces genuine intellectual friction. A peer review process where students must justify their feedback, not just give it. A prompt that asks: "Who benefits from the argument you're making? Who does it leave out?" A requirement to revise not just for grammar but for reasoning. These moves push the learner to step outside their own first draft of thinking and examine it critically — which is precisely what Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development points toward: the growth that happens not alone, but in structured dialogue with others who can see further than you currently can.

Cazden's "pedagogical weaving" feels like exactly the right metaphor here. The skilled teacher doesn't abandon mimesis once synthesis begins, or discard synthesis once reflexivity is introduced. They weave. They know when a student needs a model to imitate, when they need permission to draw on their own life, and when they need to be pushed to think about their thinking.

The Missed Opportunity

What I see most often in practice — and this is an honest observation — is classrooms that are fluent in mimesis, occasionally reach synthesis, and rarely arrive at reflexivity. Not because teachers lack the desire, but because reflexivity is the most time-consuming, the hardest to assess, and the least visible in standardized testing. The architecture of accountability, ironically, pulls teachers back toward mimesis even when they know better.

This is the structural challenge that no individual pedagogy can solve alone.
