It consisted of tasks of varying complexity, and the results were compared to a child’s “mental age,” showing whether the child was ahead of or behind the norm. The main goal of the test was to measure natural intelligence, separate from school knowledge. The child was treated as a complete “ignoramus” to exclude the influence of memorized information. Binet believed that the foundation of intelligence is the ability to make judgments — common sense, initiative, and adaptability. In his view, this faculty was more important than all other mental abilities.

There exist various kinds of intelligence tests. One of the most well-known intelligence tests is Raven’s Progressive Matrices, developed by psychologist John C. Raven.

How the test works: The participant is shown a matrix of geometric figures (usually 3×3). One cell is left blank. The task is to select from several options the figure that logically completes the pattern.The tasks are based on principles such as: changes in shape, changes in the number of elements,combinations of several patterns.

Each correct answer adds points, and the final score is compared with normative tables to determine the level of intelligence.

Strengths of the Test:

Weaknesses:

Cultural and educational factors - despite attempts to make the test culturally neutral, experience with abstract problem-solving may still depend on educational background.

Many students give examples of different intelligence tests. For instance, @Mary Joy Laurora mentioned the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS). This test is appropriate for evaluating general cognitive strengths, identifying learning difficulties, and informing gifted program placements.

Intelligence tests are useful for assessing cognitive potential and the ability to solve new problems. However, in educational practice they cannot replace knowledge testing because they do not reflect the level of mastery of academic material. It is more appropriate to consider them as different but complementary assessment tools.
