In Philippine Junior High School English classrooms, Critical Literature Pedagogy (CLP) encourages students to move beyond simple comprehension toward critical interpretation. Texts are approached not as neutral sources of information but as products of particular historical, political, and cultural contexts.

Through this approach, Filipino literary works become powerful entry points for examining issues of power, inequality, and representation. Students analyze how stories, poems, and songs reflect the social conditions in which they were produced. They learn to identify whose perspectives are emphasized, whose voices are marginalized, and how narratives influence collective understanding of history and society. In this way, literature becomes a lens through which learners interrogate dominant ideas and question established interpretations.

Instructional practices within CLP often include strategies such as reading against the text, where students analyze implicit assumptions and ideologies embedded within narratives. Learners may also create counter-texts—such as essays, poems, spoken word performances, or multimedia outputs—that challenge prevailing narratives and express alternative perspectives. By connecting literary analysis with lived experiences and contemporary social issues, students begin to see literacy as a tool for reflection, dialogue, and civic awareness.

The value of this pedagogical approach lies in its capacity to cultivate critical thinking, social consciousness, and learner agency. Students are encouraged to participate actively in meaning-making rather than passively receiving interpretations. At the same time, effective implementation requires careful balance to ensure that critical engagement with texts also strengthens foundational language skills. When thoughtfully applied, critical literacy enables learners to recognize how language shapes power relations and empowers them to engage more thoughtfully with the world around them.
