Vygotsky introduced the concept of the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which explains that students learn best when teachers provide guidance that matches their current level of ability while gradually helping them reach higher levels of understanding. This idea supports differentiated learning because teachers must recognize students’ individual needs and adjust instruction accordingly.

In practice, differentiated learning can be applied by providing multiple learning activities or options for students. For example, during a lesson, some students may prefer reading information, others may learn better through videos, and some may benefit from hands-on activities. Teachers can design lessons that include a combination of visual materials, discussions, group work, and practical activities to support different learners.

In Physical Education (PE), learner diversity is very visible because students have different levels of physical ability, coordination, and fitness. A teacher might differentiate a fitness activity by allowing students to choose between different levels of difficulty. For example, in a push-up activity, beginners may perform modified push-ups while more advanced students perform standard push-ups. This allows all students to participate while working at an appropriate level for their ability.

By recognizing learner diversity, teachers create a more inclusive and supportive learning environment. Differentiated instruction helps ensure that all students have the opportunity to learn effectively and develop confidence in their abilities.
