color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">An important site of multimodal communication in my life and in the lives of many students is the blended learning environment in the classroom, where face-to-face instruction intersects with digital platforms such as learning management systems, video conferencing, interactive whiteboards, and student-created multimedia projects. For example, in one lesson students simultaneously interpreted the teacher’s oral explanation, infographic projections, collaborative comments in chat, and their own notes, and then responded by recording a short video or designing a slide; consequently, meaning emerges from the interaction between visual, auditory, textual, and gestural resources rather than from a single mode alone. Moreover, the multimodal analysis of sites proves useful because it reveals how semiotic choices divide information and shape understanding: in particular, it helps identify the modes in which disciplinary concepts exist (e.g., diagrams versus verbal definitions), how timing and sequencing can support their (structured) understanding. guides attention and interpretation (Kress & van Leeuwen, 2001). Furthermore, such analyzes are pedagogically valuable because they inform inclusive design—encouraging educators to provide captions, transcripts, and alternative representations—and refine assessment practices by providing a backdrop for students’ ability to compose meaning across media, not just to produce alphabetical texts. Furthermore, compared to traditional notions of literacy that prioritize decoding and composing print-based linear text, multimodal literacy expands the concept to include visual, audio, spatial, and interactive competencies; thus, while conventional literacy places emphasis on individual reading and writing skills, the multimodal perspective frames literacy as design-oriented, collaborative, and context-sensitive (New London Group, 1996). Therefore, by integrating multimodal analysis into curriculum and assessment, educators can better align instruction with the communicative practices students actually use, promote equity through multiple expressive choices, and foster critical designers who can navigate and create meaning across various social media and contexts.
