This is especially true for Indigenous Peoples (IPs), whose educational experiences reflect intricate contradictions shaped by social and historical contexts. These difficulties have historical roots in colonial eras. Formal education was mainly intended for Christianized Filipinos during the Spanish rule (1565–1898), and many indigenous populations residing in distant locations were either denied access to education or subjected to missionary instruction meant to assimilate them into colonial religion and culture.

The public education system later spread throughout the nation during the American colonial era (1898–1946), encouraging English-language instruction and Western-based curricula, but it mainly disregarded indigenous cultures, knowledge systems, and languages. Indigenous students consequently entered a system of education that did not represent their identities, customs, or learning styles. In the current societal environment, the Philippines' estimated 14 to 17 million Indigenous Peoples, who belong to more than 100 ethnolinguistic groups, frequently reside in remote regions with little access to education, such as the Cordillera region and portions of Mindanao. High dropout rates and inconsistent attendance are caused by the fact that many students have to travel great distances to attend lessons. Due to the fact that many Indigenous families fall below the national poverty line, economic marginalization also plays a significant role.

As a result, children are compelled to assist with home expenses rather than pursue further education.Public education is nominally free, but there are additional obstacles because of hidden costs such daily meal bills, school supplies, and transportation. The cultural mismatch between formal education and indigenous lifestyles is another significant conflict. While indigenous communities have rich traditional knowledge systems that include environmental stewardship, oral histories, spiritual beliefs, and community governance, the national curriculum prioritizes standardized subjects, Western knowledge frameworks, and the use of Filipino and English as primary languages of instruction. When these types of information are removed or disregarded in the classroom, Indigenous learners may feel alienated and perceive their cultural identity as inferior.

The Department of Education's Indigenous Peoples Education (IPEd) Program, which aims to create culturally responsive education by integrating indigenous knowledge, promoting mother-tongue instruction, and involving community leaders in educational planning, is one of the policies the Philippine government implemented in response to these disparities. Despite these progressive goals, there are still implementation issues because of a lack of finance, a shortage of teachers with cultural training, and national standardized tests that don't accurately represent indigenous situations. The conflict between the growth of education and the preservation of culture is another paradox. Indigenous youth can benefit from education in terms of employment, leadership, and social mobility, but it can also lead to migration to cities and a disconnection from ancestral customs, dialects, and community life. Some elders are concerned that formal education may inadvertently contribute to the loss of indigenous cultural heritage and identity.

While education has enabled many Indigenous women to become community leaders and advocates, gender dynamics add another level of complexity because Indigenous girls may encounter additional obstacles like early household responsibilities or cultural expectations that restrict their educational participation. The conflict between inclusion and marginalization, opportunity and cultural survival, is ultimately highlighted by the experience of Indigenous Peoples in Philippine education.

Education systems must promote culturally responsive teaching, community involvement, acknowledgment of indigenous knowledge systems, and increased investment in remote educational infrastructure in order to resolve these contradictions and enable education to genuinely function as a tool for cultural identity preservation and empowerment.
